Online safety for kids is one of those topics that generates a lot of anxiety and a lot of conflicting advice. As someone who has researched this extensively, I want to share what the evidence and experience actually suggest works — and what doesn't.
Conversation First, Controls Second
Parental controls are a tool, not a solution. The most effective protection for children online is an open, ongoing conversation about what they're doing, who they're talking to, and what to do if something makes them uncomfortable. Kids who feel they can come to a parent with a problem are far safer than kids who are simply blocked from certain sites.
Age-Appropriate Parental Controls
That said, controls are valuable — especially for younger children. Built-in tools like Screen Time (iOS) and Family Link (Android/Google) allow you to set content filters, time limits, and app restrictions. For younger kids, these are genuinely useful guardrails.
Teach Them About Privacy

Keep Devices in Common Areas

Children learn from watching adults. If they see you using your phone mindlessly, ignoring privacy settings, or clicking on suspicious links, they'll absorb those habits. Be intentional about modeling the digital behaviors you want them to develop.
