Hi, I'm Cara Nolan
Cybersecurity professional turned everyday privacy advocate. Welcome to Digital Safe Life.

Why I Started This Blog
For over fifteen years, I worked in corporate network security — first as an analyst, then as a consultant helping mid-sized companies shore up their defenses against data breaches, phishing attacks, and insider threats. I spent my days thinking about firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and vulnerability assessments.
But it wasn't until I started helping my own family — my parents, my sister, my friends — that I realized how big the gap was between what security professionals know and what everyday people actually understand. My mom was reusing the same password on every account. My brother was banking on hotel Wi-Fi without a second thought. My neighbor had clicked on a phishing email and lost access to her email account for two weeks.
None of them were careless people. They just didn't have access to the right information in a form they could actually use. Most cybersecurity content is written for IT professionals, not for real people living real lives.
So in 2022, I started Digital Safe Life to be the resource I wished I could hand to everyone I cared about: practical, honest, jargon-free guidance for protecting yourself online — no tech degree required.
What You'll Find Here
Honest Reviews
I test the tools I write about. When I recommend something — like the VPN I've used daily for years — it's because I've evaluated it professionally and found it genuinely trustworthy.
Plain-English Guides
No jargon, no fear-mongering. Just clear, step-by-step guidance you can actually follow — whether you're a complete beginner or just someone who wants to be more careful online.
Real-Life Focus
I write about situations most of us actually face: using public Wi-Fi, setting up a home network, keeping kids safe online, traveling with devices, shopping and banking securely.
A Note on Affiliate Links
Some links on this blog are affiliate links — meaning if you click and make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only link to products I personally use and genuinely recommend. The most prominent example is NordVPN, which I've been using as my daily VPN for several years and evaluated against many alternatives. Affiliate income helps keep this blog running and free to read. I'm always transparent about this, and it never influences what I recommend — my professional reputation depends on giving you honest advice.
